Sassy and Waldo are good dogs, who keep their house safe (from squirrels, mostly), and worry about their boy, Stewart, who always comes home from school smelling of anxiety; so the two dogs come up with a plan to help him--they will dress up in a trench coat and attend school, posing as a new student, to find out just what is bothering Stewart.

On the planet Nebulon in 2120, Zack joins his school's Explorer's Club and visits Juno, a planet made of crystals, but he is less than thrilled when he is partnered with the class bully.

It is field trip day to the city museum, and while Stewart expects a boring day of facts and learning, Waldo and Sassy are looking forward to lunch; then they find that the dinosaur room is full of tempting bones, the astronaut boots are good for chewing, and one of the dioramas features a squirrel on a sidewalk, but the highlight is the delicatessen--if only Waldo and Sassy's disguise can fool the guards who are searching for two dogs.

Zack is shocked to find a large, green, six-eyed creature sitting in his place at school one morning, but soon learns that he and the "monster" have a lot in common.

When summer arrives on Nebulon, Zack discovers that his best friend, Drake, is afraid to learn to swim and decides to teach him before they go on a trip to water-covered planet Araxie.
